AlhambraThis castle is the most memorable because of its beauty and cultural definition for the Spanish people. The unique thing about this attraction is that it is one of the last castles built by Muslims when they ruled on the Iberian peninsula as well as one of the last castles still standing out of those built. Rock Of Gibraltar, A Physical attractionSpain has many physical attractions but today we visited the Rock Of Gibraltar which is a promontory located Gibraltar a U.K. overseas territory . It forms a peninsula jutting out into the Strait of Gibraltar, and is part of the Gibraltar nature reserve. Rock Of Gibraltar ↧ It has many caves due to it being made of limestone which slowly dissolves when exposed to water and also due to events in WW2 in which the British Army constructed a elaborate underground bunker to protect their strategic location. Belchite, A Historical attractionThese ruins are the aftermath and a symbol of the Spanish civil war in which hundreds of thousands of lives were lost. A major battle called the "Battle Of Belchite" occurred here in which several hundred thousand troops and hundreds of tanks and aircraft fought here over 2 weeks. The ruins of Belchite ↧ After the Spanish Civil War the ruins were ordered to be left untouched by the winner of the war, Francisco Franco who ruled over spain with a totalitarian state.
Today we went to the Alhambra, a fortress in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. It is located on a hill overlooking the city, and was inhabited by many leaders including Isabella The First of Castile. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, because it is one of the last castles that were built in by Muslims in Europe and was called "Pearl set in Emeralds" by Moorish poets because of the color of the buildings and color of the forest around it. Alhambra ↧ It has been spared from much of neglect that most castles of this age suffer from by reconstruction efforts , and has been subject of numerous pieces of literature. Although the reconstruction efforts have had controversy because of ill judgement in reconstruction of certain parts of the castle, they have saved it from total disrepair and possible collapse.
So what is Spain known for historically? The Spanish-American War, of course! The war occurred in 1898. The remainder of the Spanish empire in the Americas- Cuba, Puerto Rico- was lost to the United States. The most famous national holiday in Spain is the Fiesta Nacional de España on October 12. It commemorates the anniversary of Columbus's first arrival in the Americas. Although the holiday was not held during our time of visit, we were able to learn a lot of about it because it was only a few months away. Spain is also known for its soccer league- La Liga. One of Spain's most popular person is Andres Iniesta. He is one of the best soccer players of all time, and it currently the captain of the Spanish National Team as well as his club team- FC Barcelona. <- Andres Iniesta Today we went to the cathedral of Santiago De Compostela. It was built to house the remains of Santiago (St.James) who was one of the 12 Apostles from Jerusalem and is the patron saint of all Spaniards , after the church that held the remains before was destroyed by the Muslims when they ruled Spain in 997 AD. Cathedral of Santiago De Compestela and surrounding area. ↧ The cathedral is very magnificent and awe inspiring as it overlooks the rest of the city. It has Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture with the Romanesque composing most the building and Gothic and Baroque composing of the rest.
People in Spain are known to be very nice. They love to be overly friendly and engage in close body contact with others, such as hugging and kissing other people's cheeks as a form of greeting. For example, they would say Hola (Hello) and Adios (Goodbye) integrated with a kiss on each cheek. It was very awkward to integrate this lifestyle for the first week, but Mason and I quickly became used to it.(Cultural Taboos) Spain is known for its diverse traditional music and dances. Most notable is Jota, which is popular all throughout Spain. Jota is danced in two's as couples raise their hands above their heads playing castanets. We actually had a chance to dance Jota with some natives in house party hosted by one of our close friends there. Spain is also popular for Siesta, a tradition in which people rest during the afternoon. Businesses are usually closed during this period, lasting about from 2pm-5pm. (Custom and Tradition) We had an opportunity wear the gilecuelo, a traditional dress of Spain. It is a very popular dress. You probably saw it on famous films as well! We also got to eat real spanish food! Tortilla Espanola, Croquettes, Gazpacho, Pisto, Jamon, etc... For La Comida (Lunch), we would have the largest meal as that is what Spanish people do. A typical lunch consisted of rice, fresh fish or seafood, roast chicken, fried potatoes, served with wine and coffee&dessert to end the course. I loved them all! <- gilecuelo <- Jota (In this blog, we will be taking you through our 2-month long journey in Spain.
Spain is located in far southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Travelers to Spain can expect a variety of climates due to its vast size. The Mediterranean climate is characterized by its dry summers and mild, rainy winters. We experienced the dry hot summer. We packed mostly short sleeve shirts and a lot of tank tops. Oh, and four cans of sunscreen! (Relative location & Climate) People in Spain use the ocean for fish and other sea food. They also use vegetation for food such as: olives, fruit, vegetables, and other plantation. Spaniards have changed the environment by building more buildings, structures, and displays.
